Languages (Firmament)

From Bestiary of the Hypogriph

The Firmament is home to numerous languages, dialects, pidgins, and creoles.

Telamonian languages[edit | edit source]

Common[edit | edit source]

Common is the lingua franca of Telamon, spoken and understood by most civilizations. Believed to be a combination of Human, Elven and Dwarven dialects, it serves as the main language in international affairs.

Draconic[edit | edit source]

Draconic is the language spoken by dragons and other reptilian races such as Kobolds and Crocodilians. It is believed to be the oldest mortal language, perhaps even older than mortalkind itself, and as such, many languages can trace themselves back to it.

Dwarven[edit | edit source]

Dwarven is the language of the Dwarves, which shares many characteristics with Terran, and as such is believed to descend from that tongue. It is a hardy and stubborn tongue like the people who speak it, and has remained relatively uncharged since its introduction to the world nine thousand years ago. It makes ample use of runes, which the dwarves are heavily associated with.

Goblin[edit | edit source]

Goblin is the language of all goblinoids, which is believed to have originated from the Orcish tongue. It is a quick and sharp tongue, usually made up of aggressive terms and sentences.

Merovaren[edit | edit source]

Merovaren is the tongue of the Lizardfolk, which is a variation of Draconic with certain regional dialects from the Crocodilians who share their homeland. They generally only speak it among their own kind, preferring to speak in Common when dealing with other races.

Skitterish[edit | edit source]

Skitterish is the vile tongue of the Rakash. It is a highly bastardized version of Infernal filled with squeaks and trills, that is spoken in a quick, hurried manner, where statements are often short, clipped, and repeated several times in a row in an effort to add emphasis. Due to the speed with which it is spoken, long sentences are often broken up into several fragments.

Extraplanar languages[edit | edit source]

Aquan[edit | edit source]

Aquan is the language of the Plane of Water. It is spoken by all Water Elementals and creatures who'd associate themselves with them.

Auran[edit | edit source]

Auran is the soft-spoken tongue of the Plane of Air. It is spoken by all Air Elementals and creatures who'd associate themselves with them.

Celestial[edit | edit source]

Celestial is the pleasant tongue of all benevolent outsiders, serving as the native language of Ziana.

Ignan[edit | edit source]

Ignan is the furious tongue of the Plane of Fire. It is spoken by all Fire Elementals and creatures who'd associate themselves with them.

Infernal[edit | edit source]

Infernal is the cruel tongue of all malevolent outsiders, serving as the reigning language of Irkalla.

Mortific[edit | edit source]

Mortific is the language of the Underworld, spoken by the psychopomps, though it is also adopted by other neutral outsiders and, as a mockery of death, by many undead.

Terran[edit | edit source]

Terran is the slow language of the Plane of Earth. It is spoken by all Earth Elementals and creatures who'd associate themselves with them.
