The Living Inanimate[edit | edit source]
If an item is left on it's on for long enough, in the right environment (damp, warm but not too warm, the same sort of environment that promotes mold), then it will grow in a strange sort of living-object.
Usually they've got a good amount of organic material. Wool, wood and similar.
A mimic needs to start out as a mundane object that is exposed to human presence frequently, and then suddenly abandoned.
If left unchecked, it becomes spite-filled and is no better than a feral animal, but if you reintroduce to distanced interaction, it can be placated without losing its animation. Over a few months, it can become acclimated to more or less constant exposure.
Chest mimics, floor mimics, ceiling mimics, door mimics, bed mimics.
The list of potential animate objects is as large as the possible objects that can be made predominantly of wooden or formerly living matter.
