Underworld (Firmament)

From Bestiary of the Hypogriph

Template:Plane

The Underworld, also called the Purgatory, is an outer plane where the souls of dead mortals from the Material Plane are judged by Dominus Mortis, the god of death, before they are sent to the afterlife that better suits them.

Description[edit | edit source]

Much of the Underworld resembles a barren wasteland, devoid of light and covered in white mist. The souls of the recently deceased wait in a line ending in a small harbor at the mouth of the River Styx, where they must then cross the river by entering a boat commandeered by Dominus Mortis himself, who along the way judges their feats in life and ends the journey by sending them to the afterlife most fitting for them.

Inhabitants[edit | edit source]

Mortal souls with a neutral stance in life generally inhabit the Underworld in death, where they alternate between traversing the wastelands in deep contemplation or congregate in groups centered around a powerful outsider who resides in the realm, living idealized versions of their mortal lives.

Most outsiders native to the Underworld are the psychopomps, a clade of spirits who serve the will of Dominus Mortis and ensure the cycle of life and death is maintained across the Firmament. Mortal souls who prove their worth in the Underworld may choose to ascend into psychopomps.

The Crypt Wyrms are the True Wyrms native to the Underworld.

Places of interest[edit | edit source]

  • Blackharp Mansion - The home of Black Harp resembles an old, haunted manor.
  • Bone Heap - The domain of Sepultura, where the bones of all those who wrong the keeper of the dead make up a mountain where he resides.
  • Library of Passing - A facility where records of every individual death are kept and overseen by Thanatos.
  • River Styx - A river of damned souls which traverses the Underworld, passes through Ziana and ends in Irkalla. It serves as the personal domain of Dominus Mortis and is generally the first area the souls of the dead find themselves in.
