Varagarash Narahil

From Bestiary of the Hypogriph

Template:Deity Varagarash Narahil, otherwise known as Vargash, is the god of domination, conquest, tyranny and corruption, who is considered one of the most wicked forces in the Firmament. A being of infinite selfishness, he wishes to subjugate all other gods and become the ruler of the realms, so that all beings who inhabit it can do nothing but appease it to the end of their lives.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Varagarash resembles a monstrous cross between a centipede and a Bobbit worm. His maw is a nightmare of rows upon rows of fangs, and his fourteen eyes are as black as the void. Rows of spikes grow out of his back, and his body extends to an indefinite length; legends say he is massive enough to circle the entire Firmament and bite the tip of his own tail, though this is likely an exaggeration as his entire body fits within his realm of Irkalla.

History[edit | edit source]

Varagarash is most famed for having caused the Great Gap; envious of Aether, he went on rampages which led to the deaths of many gods and the destruction of countless distant worlds. In response, many gods joined forces and struck at the vile being, defeating him and locking him in the darkest depths of the plane of Irkalla, causing much of history to be supernaturally erased from the Firmament's collective memory in the process. While he remains bound there, he has slowly broke free through the millenia, threatening to consume all in his path when the time for his vengeance is finally at hand.

Realm[edit | edit source]

The realm known as the Abyssal End serves as both Varagarash's home and prison. Located at the deepest pits of Irkalla, it is a wasteland littered with massive blue crystals which grow from the god's enormous body, believed to be his blood in solid form. Lympharian demons are particularly common there, believed to be born out of these crystals and constantly working on keeping the enemies of the bound god at bay. Most demons who don't associate themselves with Varagarash's spheres avoid the region at all costs, as those who fall there typically end up being brainwashed into his servitude.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Varagarash is the most malevolent force to exist within the Firmament. Representing an insidious and selfish form of evil, he believes all of creation is his and that all other gods are obstacles in his path. He treats mortals as expendable tools, wishing for their veneration but never holding affection for even their most devoted.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Varagarash is among the most despised beings in the Firmament. His closest neighbours, the demon lords, often take steps to ensure his prison remains stable, for they would be the first to fall should he break free. Out of all gods, he hates Aether the most, considering his goal to usurp her spheres and take her place in the cosmos. Other dark deities are not exempt from Varagarash's disdain, for he is a selfish god and refuses to share his spoils with others.

Cult of Varagarash Narahil[edit | edit source]

Varagarash is associated with conquest, and as such feeds on war and conflict instigated by tyrants and conquerors across history; it is said such individuals pray to the god so that he may bless them with victories over their enemies. However, Varagarash does not favour any servants he cannot directly control, meaning he ignores the worship of those not of his clergy.

The clergy of the Worm Who Devours the World is called the Cult of the Worm, an organization of tempted or brainwashed mortals who dedicate themselves to freeing Varagarash from his prison. Originally founded by ancient Elves, it was destroyed millenia in the past before being brought back in the modern era by the undead Human named Tibias Marrow. These individuals, who hide among the populace of many nations, use temptation, trickery, blackmail and brainwashing in order to increase their ranks, and the followers of the Worm are believed to number into the several thousands across the world in the current day.

Worship of Varagarash is also found among the more irredeemable tribes of Orcs, Goblins, Minotaurs, Tusclanders and Ogres, though the deity rarely directs his attention to them, seeing them as unworthy.
